Curriculum Details

Tremendous Growth

This is a year of tremendous growth both academically and spiritually. Students will be receiving two sacraments, Reconciliation and the Eucharist, for the first time! Much preparation and individual involvement ensures an even closer relationship with God.

Math Skills

Math skills will include making sense of problems and persevering in solving them. Students will learn to reason abstractly and quantitatively. They will be able to count within 1000; skip-count by 2s, 5s, and 10s.Working with time and money will teach children to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest 5 minutes using a. m. and p. m. Combinations of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies will be used to solve word problems. Identifying geometric shapes such as triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes will become familiar. The use of pictographs, bar graphs, circle graphs, and line graphs will become familiar.

Reading Skills

Reading skills will involve knowing and applying phonics and word analysis in decoding words, reading with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension, being able to identify the main purpose of a text, and comprehending informational texts which include history/social studies and science.

Language Skills

Language skills for second graders are being able to determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words and phrases based on grade two reading. Knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes, compound words, use of collective nouns, irregular plural nouns and reflexive pronouns.

Writing Skills

Writing skills will focus on writing opinion pieces, informative/explanatory texts, narratives, and information from experiences or gather information from provided sources.

Social Studies

Social Studies presents for the second grader the differences between things that happened long ago and things that happened yesterday. They will learn map skills, cardinal and intermediate directions, and basic land use in urban, suburban, and rural environments in California. They will learn how laws are made and carried out. Food production and consumption from long ago and today will be discussed.

Science studies include physical sciences, life sciences, and earth sciences. Students will know the motions of objects can be observed and measured. They will learn that plants and animals have predictable life cycles. That the Earth is made of materials that have distinct properties and provide resources for human activities will be studied and become more familiar.

In short, second grade learning opens up whole new worlds for the curious developing mind of a seven year old child. I look forward to being a part of the spiritual and academic growth of your child.
